Whether your classroom is online or in person, teaching one-on-one or to hundreds of learners, you can effectively use open educational resources (OER) in your course. We’ve created this quick walk through to help you get started.
Open textbooks and open course materials for your class
- Choose a textbook that matches your course or locate course materials for teaching in person, online, or a hybrid of the two from the B.C. Open Collection.
- Explore the open textbook or course material to evaluate the content, delivery options, interactivity, and in many cases, supplemental material to improve your curriculum. Use the Adoption Guide to inform your decision.
- Modify the open textbook or course content to match your learning outcomes. If using a textbook, add chapters from another open textbook, or update the information to match current conditions in your field of study. Learn how to modify an open textbook and course content in the Adaptation Guide.
- Share the open textbook or course with your students and teaching team. If using an open textbook, provide them with a link to the textbook, so they can choose the format that works best for them (including an affordable print-on-demand option from BCcampus), or download and modify your version, then make it available through various learning management systems (LMS) or online file-sharing services.
- Notify us so we can track the adoption of open textbooks and open course materials in British Columbia.
Everyone can use open educational resources
